Irregular Magazine

Sunday, January 10, 2010 by pete284

There have been a number of web gaming magazines over the past few years. Wargames Journal was an excellent web magazine and then went commercial into print form. Unfortunately this was the death of the excellent mag.

Fictional Reality was another excellent magazine that lasted for over 38 issues. It was recently announced that it was stopping.

A new magazine was launched in the summer of 2009 called Irregular Magazine. Issue 3 has just been released, take a look. I wish them every success with the future of this magazine.

Classic Wargames Books

Sunday, October 4, 2009 by pete284

I have quite a substantial collection of old wargames books from the 60’s and 70’s. I can’t resist popping in a secondhand bookshop to see what treasures they hold. Wargames books in general secondhand bookshops tend to be a lot cheaper than ebay or specialist military bookshops.

Even so there are titles that are still very hard to find. Well John Curry Events Wargames Rules are now reprinting some of the old classics. There are books from Don Featherstone, Charlie Wesencraft and Paddy Griffith to name a few little gems in here.

Some of these reprints are cheaper than the specialist bookshops are charging for the original copy. So go on and treat yourself and see the type of books that inspired old gamers like me.

Space Hulk Layout Tool

Saturday, September 12, 2009 by pete284

There has been alot of hype about the 3rd Edition of Space Hulk. Games Workshop has only done a limited run of these games and I hear that it is already sold out. The figures are already going for ridiculous money on Ebay.

I have to say I prefer the 1st Edition rules and teh 2nd Edition terrain graphics.

Anyway CRasterImage has created a tool for creating hulk layouts and allows you to save the result as Images for importation into other packages.

New Painting Service

Wednesday, September 2, 2009 by pete284

I am a member of Deeside Defenders and for the past couple of years Jon from the club has been painting figures for some of us more mature members so that he can earn extra cash.

I’ve had some 20mm Boxers and two 10mm Hundred Year Wars armies done.

Now Jon has opened up his service to non club members and goes under the Company name A Brush Too Far. Highly recommended.

Warhammer and Blue Oyster Cult

Wednesday, April 15, 2009 by pete284

Like Blue Oyster Cult (of Don’t Fear the Reaper Fame) and like Warhammer. Then combine them together:

What happens when you combine hard-rock with the madness and fury of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning? We found out when Eric Bloom (well-known gamer and Level 40 Sorc on Ironfist server!) and Richie Castellano - WAR fanatics and members of the legendary rock band Blue Öyster Cult - dropped in to tour Mythic headquarters and then headed into the recording studio with the Mythic crew to lay down a track dedicated to the Dwarf Slayer!

The resulting song - “Kiss My Axe (While I Drink My Beer)!” - is available for the first time here, to celebrate the launch of the oath-sworn Dwarf Slayer! So slather your Mohawks with pig fat, crank up your speakers and enjoy!

Campaigns of General William Augustus Pettygree

Tuesday, February 10, 2009 by pete284

Heard about this great site by Bill Protz (who used to run the Seven Years War Association) via the Meeples and Miniatures Podcast.

Its a boys own adventure where Bill refights a colonial campaign, takes hundreds of photgraphs and publishes them as a boys own adventure. Excellent reading as a gamer.

An Old School Fictional Campaign
Adapted from dynamics of Jack Scruby, Donald Featherstone, Tony Bath and Peter Gilder. This is a serialized novelette told mostly by captioned photos of an on-going solo and participatory fictional campaign.
